Rome – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that reducing tension in the Middle East region is “urgent and necessary,” following the Israeli raids on Lebanon.
Meloni indicated in a statement on Tuesday that she is in constant contact with the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs and that she is closely following the “tense situation” in Lebanon.
She added: “Protecting civilians and ensuring the security of the Italian unit operating in southern Lebanon within the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) remains a priority.”
She added: “Italy will continue to work with its allies to achieve stability on the border between Israel and Lebanon and for the return of the displaced to their homes.”
She continued: “Reducing tension at the regional level is urgent and necessary.”
For his part, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in a statement to the “TG2” channel, called on his country’s citizens to leave Lebanon.
Tajani indicated in a post on the X platform on Monday that he participated in an emergency video meeting of European Union foreign ministers regarding developments in the Middle East.
He pointed out that a humanitarian aid package worth 17 million euros had been provided to alleviate the suffering of the displaced Lebanese people.
Since September 23, Israel has launched the “most violent and widespread” attack on Lebanon since the beginning of the confrontations with the Lebanese factions about a year ago, which resulted, as of Tuesday dawn, at least 1,057 dead, including children and women, and 2,950 wounded, according to Anatolia’s monitoring of authorities’ data. Lebanese, amid fears of the outbreak of a regional war.
