We need a “pragmatic approach” and not an “ideological” one if we want to protect the environment. Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke this morning in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the occasion of Cop29, the 29th UN Conference on climate change. “Italy intends to continue to do its part. We already allocate a large part of the over four billion euros of the Climate Fund to the African continent and we will continue to support initiatives such as the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund, as well as promote the involvement of multilateral development banks. It is equally a priority that the decarbonization process takes into consideration the sustainability of our production and social systems theme risks leading us astray towards success. The right path is that of technological neutrality, because currently there is no single alternative to supplying from fossil fuels”, stated the Prime Minister.

“We need a balanced energy mix to improve the transition process. We must use all available technologies. Not only renewables, but also gas, biofuels, hydrogen, CO2 capture and, in the future, nuclear fusion which could produce clean, safe and unlimited energy. Italy is at the forefront of fusion nuclear energy”, explained Meloni. “This summit, for which I thank the Azerbaijani presidency, is called to give further impetus to the commitment to limit the increase in global temperature to within 1.5 degrees,” he said. At COP28 in Dubai “we set ourselves ambitious objectives: to triple the capacity to generate renewable energy in the world and double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency by 2030. To achieve these objectives, everyone’s collaboration is needed – starting from the main greenhouse gas emitters – as well as adequate financial support”.

How can technological neutrality reshape the strategies countries adopt in the transition ⁣away from fossil fuels?

**Interview with ⁣Dr. Elena Rossi, Environmental Policy Expert**

**Editor:** Welcome, Dr. Rossi!‌ We’re here to discuss Prime Minister Giorgia ⁣Meloni’s recent statements ⁣at COP29 in Baku. ⁣She ⁣emphasized a pragmatic approach ‌to environmental issues. What ⁣are your thoughts on this perspective?

**Dr. Rossi:** Thank you⁣ for having me! I think⁤ Prime Minister ‍Meloni’s call for a pragmatic approach⁤ is a crucial ⁢step. In climate discussions, especially at a global forum⁢ like COP29, there often exists a divide between idealistic visions and practical solutions. Pragmatism allows policymakers to ⁤create actionable strategies that can drive real change⁤ without getting bogged down by purely ideological debates.

**Editor:** She mentioned⁣ Italy’s ⁤significant financial contributions to the Climate Fund, particularly targeting the African continent. How important is international funding in climate initiatives?

**Dr. Rossi:**⁢ International funding ‌is essential. Many developing countries lack the financial resources to effectively⁢ combat climate change. By directing funds ‍like those from Italy to initiatives such as the Green Climate Fund, we can help‌ build resilience in vulnerable communities, support ⁣renewable energy projects, and address the immediate‌ impacts of climate change. It’s a global issue that requires a collective response.

**Editor:** The Prime ‌Minister ‍also spoke about “technological neutrality.” How should this concept ⁢influence‌ the transition away from⁤ fossil fuels?

**Dr. Rossi:** Technological neutrality suggests that we should not favor one⁣ technology over another in our transition efforts; instead, we should allow for multiple solutions to flourish. This⁢ is particularly important because the energy landscape is diverse, and what’s feasible in one region may not⁤ work in another. It encourages innovation and competition, which could‌ lead to more effective and sustainable ⁢energy solutions.

**Editor:** Sustainability of production⁤ and social systems was⁤ highlighted as a priority. How can countries balance industrial growth with environmental sustainability?

**Dr. Rossi:** It’s definitely a balancing act. Countries must implement policies that incentivize sustainable practices and innovation in industries. Integrating sustainability into‍ the business model of various sectors—like‍ manufacturing, agriculture, and technology—can help achieve economic growth while minimizing environmental impact. Collaboration between governments, businesses, and communities is crucial‌ in developing frameworks that support both objectives.

**Editor:**⁤ Thank ⁤you, Dr. Rossi, for sharing your insights. It seems that a ⁢balanced approach could⁢ be key ‌in ⁣addressing ⁢the ‌pressing climate challenges we ⁣face.

**Dr. Rossi:** Absolutely. Thank⁢ you for the discussion, and let’s ‌hope⁢ for meaningful outcomes from COP29!
