Citing the threat of terrorism and increased illegal migration, Italy and Slovenia are starting border controls at internal Schengen borders today. Italy controls the border with Slovenia and the neighboring country controls those with Croatia and Hungary, it was said.

Both countries initially announced the measure for ten days – until October 30th – according to the relevant list from the European Union. According to politicians, Italy and Slovenia are currently expecting the control measures to last up to two months.

In view of the “intensifying crises at Europe’s borders, especially following the attack on Israel,” concerns regarding terrorist attacks have increased, said Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, justifying the decision.

The Slovenian government, for its part, gave the green light for controls at the Schengen internal borders with Croatia and Hungary. “We don’t want radical people or people with terrorist intentions to come via the Western Balkan route,” said Interior Minister Bostjan Poklukar.
