Italian Tourism Minister Daniela Santanqui expressed her distress over a tweet on Twitter by German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, who is visiting her country amid a scorching heat wave.
Upon his arrival in the northern Italian city of Bologna, Lauterbach asked regarding the country’s future as a tourist destination due to the intense heat.
Record temperatures were high in Italy and other countries in southern Europe, prompting officials to issue warnings, close major tourist attractions and provide assistance to those at risk.
This prompted Lauterbach to write a tweet in which he said: “The heat wave is amazing here. If it continues like this, these tourist destinations have no future in the long term. Climate change is devastating southern Europe. An era is coming to an end.”
Rome quickly responded. Santanke said Italy was still looking forward to welcoming Lauterbach once more as a tourist.
“I would like to thank the German Minister of Health for choosing Italy as his destination, which, despite everything, has always been a favorite tourist destination for his comrades,” Santanke said in a statement on Wednesday.
