BOLZANO. The provincial council of Bolzano has rejected a proposal of Sven Knoll (Süd-Tiroler Freiheit) which proposed to ask the parliament to repeal the decrees with which, during the Fascist period, the Italian-language toponyms of South Tyrol were made official. The vote invited the council “to consider the three fascist decrees on toponymy, issued in implementation of the ‘Provisions for South Tyrol, intended for an orderly, prompt and effective action of Italian assimilation’, an injustice that persists over time and that in no way can be relativized».
On behalf of the junta, the vice president Waltraud Days he recalled that “in the past the SVP has sought participatory solutions” to the question of toponymy, but that now “it would not have supported the vote because it does not address the problem well, nor value the discussion” and, above all, “it would not cancel the injustice of the past, but, would rather throw oil on the fire». Put to the vote, the proposal was rejected with 19 votes once morest and 6 in favour.
