There is no one who can resist an Italian Straw because that piece of deliciousness brings a taste of childhood that few sweets can match. For a while it disappeared, but for some time now I have seen this sweet treat appearing in various places, from big bakeries to weddings.
Origins of Italian Straw
As always, the origin of this delicacy is unknown, several stories are told and the most interesting one I found out there is this Italian one:
Italian origin
The most likely version is that it arose from “chocolate salami” or “biscotto salami”, following all, this may be the shortest path to the birth of this sweet.
Because let’s face it, for those who mix sweet biscuits, chocolate and other ingredients to make a salami-shaped roll, if you’re having a lazy day and decide to cut it into squares, it’s a no brainer.
In Brazil, Palha Italiana is a popular sweet that had its peak in the 70s and 80s, but it is now returning to Brazilian tables with new additions such as chestnuts, walnuts, pistachios adding new flavors to this traditional sweet.
My Italian Straw Recipe
I can already tell you that it can be made in any shape, I made it round because I love inventing fashion, but the most common is in squares.
Ingredients:
- 1 can of condensed milk
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of chocolate powder
- 200g cornstarch biscuits
How to make:
Place the condensed milk, butter and chocolate powder in a pan and place everything over medium heat, stirring constantly, but pay attention at this stage as it is essential not to stop stirring until everything is well mixed and does not stick to the bottom.
Remove the pan from the heat and add the crushed cornstarch biscuits, mix well until everything is coated in the dough. Grease a mold with butter or line it with baking paper and pour everything in, press to level and then let it cool.
If you have any doubts, just make a brigadeiro recipe and add biscuits, but everyone knows how to make brigadeiro. noah? In any case, there is a good recipe boua here. But the summary is, when the brigadeiro is done, turn off the heat and add 1/2 package (100g) of coarsely crumbled cornstarch biscuits in your hand. Mix everything, place on a baking tray greased with unsalted butter or margarine and refrigerate for 3 hours.
Cut into desired shape and roll in icing sugar. (I shaped it into balls, so I rubbed a little butter on the palm of my hand).
If you want to see it on video, here is a wonderful pie with all the details that follows this recipe.
It makes well and is very tasty, although in my opinion it has not yet stolen the position of the traditional brigadeiro, but variation is part of it, right? If you like churros, you can’t miss this option, it’s divine.
