Israel’s attack on UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has received criticism from many parties. Including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the attack was unacceptable

“Prime Minister Meloni reiterated that it is unacceptable for UNIFIL to be attacked by Israeli armed forces,” the Italian prime minister’s office said in a statement.

To Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a telephone call, Meloni emphasized that the mission operates under the authority of the UN Security Council (UNSC) to contribute to regional stability.

“Prime Minister Meloni stressed the absolute need to ensure the safety of UNIFIL personnel at all times,” explained the statement.

Again, a member of the UN peacekeeping force was injured as a result of gunfire that lasted overnight in the city of Naqoura, southern Lebanon. This is according to a statement from the mission headquarters, UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), on Saturday (12/10).

“Last night, a peacekeeper at UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura was hit by gunfire due to ongoing military activity nearby. He has undergone surgery at our hospital in Naqoura to remove the bullet and is currently in stable condition,” wrote UNIFIL in X.

The UN force called on all parties to the Israel-Hezbollah conflict to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel, including by avoiding combat activities near UNIFIL positions.

Earlier on Thursday (10/10), UNIFIL stated that an Israeli tank fired weapons at the observation tower in Naqoura. The direct fire caused two members of the peacekeeping force to fall and suffer injuries.

Furthermore, two other members of the peacekeeping force were also injured on Friday (11/10) due to two explosions near the observation tower in Naqoura. (D-2)
