Italian man dies from violin spider bite

Already in July, a 52-year-old Sicilian carabiniere, Franco Aiello, died from the bite of a spider of the same species.

New species of spider discovered along the Brussels ring road

The fiddler spider (Loxosceles rufescens) is found in Mediterranean countries, Asia and North America, according to the World Spider Catalogue maintained by the Natural History Museum of Bern.

Small in size (up to 7.5 mm), it owes its name to a violin-shaped spot on its body.

It likes arid lands, crevices and is frequently found near homes, particularly gardens.
