“I closed my eyes and waited…”. Turned into a hero, Mattia Aguzzi risked his life this Saturday to save a 5-year-old girl who fell from a fifth-floor balcony in Italy, and what could have been a tragedy ended with tears and a happy ending, since both the man like the little girl they suffered some minor trauma and can count it.
It was another day in the quiet streets of Via Nice, very close to Turin, an Italian area that exudes even more calm on weekends than usual. Mattia and his girlfriend were walking there when they heard screams, and they would go to her if the situation was of imminent danger: it is not yet known how, but a girl of just 5 years old was sitting on a balcony on the fifth floor and was about to fall into the void.
Mattia did not hesitate, he ran to the place where he calculated that the baby was going to fall and set about trying to “catch” her in the airwith the desperate goal of relieving the impact against the ground that would have almost certainly been fatal.
It was not an easy task, because with that inertia, the little girl’s own body could hurt the hero himself, but that was when Mattia later recounted the phrase with which we start these lines: “When I saw that it was released, I closed my eyes and waited…”. Fortunately, history is now full of smiles, both he and the girl suffered minor blows, they are not in danger and they will remember this Saturday for the rest of their days. She, because they will tell her that she was miraculously saved from an atrocious death, and Aguzzi’s feat will remain in newspapers and portals, with comments on social networks dedicating all kinds of praise to her.
“We were walking and we heard a boy on the opposite sidewalk yelling ‘she’s going to fall, she’s going to fall’, so it was with Mattia that we looked up and saw that the girl had sat on the ledge and was in great danger of fall into the void,” said Gloria, Mattia’s girlfriend, recalling the terrible moment.
“I started ringing all the bells, desperate to warn, but no one answered, and just a few seconds later the girl fell, Mattia managed to catch her, I don’t really know how she did it… She was left on her knees with the girl in her arms,” the young woman related emotionally, protagonist of a moment that she will never forget. Luckily, as we said, everyone can count it. And to the little girl’s parents, it will be convenient for her to close that balcony…
