During the last 24 hours, the Eurofighters of the Italian air force deployed in the 4th Operations Wing, which operates from the Polish base of Malbork, carried out a double interception of Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea, according to a report by Corriere della Sera.
The alert, initiated by the NATO command center based in Wedem (Germany), was activated yesterday and this morning for an unidentified aircraft flying over the international waters of the Baltic Sea. Once the aircraft was identified, the Italian F-2000s returned to their base in Malbork.
The Task Force Air “4th Wing” deploys four Eurofighter (F-2000) aircraft from four Air Defense Wings of the Italian Air Force: the 4th Squadron in Grosseto, the 36th in Gioia del Col, the 37th in Trapani and the 51st in Istrana. Thanks to these aircraft it is possible to ensure the interception of any suspicious trace detected by the radar within minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Italian contingent, placed under the direct national dependence of Covi (Interforce Summit Operations Command), consists of Air Force men and women from the Flight Groups and technical and logistical personnel, deployed at Krolewo Airfield in Malbork, who work together with the Polish Air Force to protect the north-eastern side of the Atlantic Alliance. It is the second time an Italian contingent has been deployed to Poland in Operation Enhanced Air Policing (eAP), the NATO-led collective defense mission.
Air policing has been carried out since peacetime and consists of the continuous surveillance of the integrity of NATO airspace, as well as the detection of possible violations, in front of which countermeasures must be activated, such as the rapid takeoff of fighter interceptors, which in technical terms it is called a “scramble”.
