Italian authorities activate yellow alert due to activity on Etna volcano

Italia The alert level for Mount Etna, located on the island of Sicily (south) and considered the most active in Europe, has been raised due to the emission of lava and tremors. There is a risk that the volcano could quickly become more active, although for now it remains at a low to medium alert level, according to Civil Protection.

The department has ordered the transition from green to yellow alert level and has urged its teams in Sicily to take measures to manage the risks, especially in relation to the presence of hikers in high altitude areas, it said in a statement.

Alert for activity on Etna volcano

The decision was made on Wednesday night due to an increase in tremors and frequent strombolian activity in the volcano’s craters, accompanied by small lava emissions in the crater area. This could result in a rapid evolution of the phenomenon towards more energetic activity, according to Civil Protection.

The yellow alert level indicates moderate eruptive activity, higher than the green level, which indicates no or very low eruptive activity. These classifications are determined by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, which continuously monitors risk assessments through the Etna Observatory.
