Asuncion, IP Agency.- More than ten Brazilian and Paraguayan companies have already made the mandatory technical visit to the site area of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant (CHI) reservoir as part of the binational bidding process called by the Entity for the provision, installation and commissioning of a 1,000 kilowatt (kW) floating solar system.
This on-site tour aims to unify the knowledge of the participants in the bidding process, to understand the physical area, the storage areas, the equipment, as well as the visualization of the site where the floating solar panels will be mounted, clarifying the level of complexity of the works to be carried out.
Engineer Pedro Domaniczky, advisor to Renewable Energies of the Right Bank, highlighted the good response from potential bidders, as it demonstrates the great interest that this call for proposals for renewable energy projects aroused.
“We are very encouraged by the binational bidding process, which is being viewed positively according to the statements of the companies that made the technical visit, seeing the relevance of the floating solar plant project, which, in fact, would be the largest in Paraguay and also a very important one in the region as a pilot plant, undertaken jointly,” he said.
He added that the tour with the company representatives was coordinated together with his counterpart from the Left Bank, engineer Rogerio Meneghetti, and that two other technical visits to verify the site of the floating solar pilot plant are planned for next Friday, August 30.
Advisor Domaniczky highlighted the interest of companies, both in Paraguay and Brazil, in this new line of work, floating solar plants, due to the energy that can be generated from the installation.
He also pointed out that the project has the support of both general directorates and is being carried out within the planned timeline within the process. “The level of participation that we see from private sector companies gives us the indication that in future projects we will be able to advance in the implementation of these new technologies, which sooner rather than later will be consolidated to complement the energy requirements on both banks,” he said.
Likewise, Engineer Domaniczky pointed out that this pilot project for a floating solar plant in the reservoir, if successful, would allow it to be scaled up and take advantage of the energy potential of this body of water of vital importance for both banks.
Submission of offers
The submission of bids by companies is scheduled for September 2024, according to Itaipu.
As for the estimated annual generation, the pilot plant expects between 1,800,000 and 2,000,000 kWh of renewable energy per year, which would be used internally, specifically in the priority area of Itaipu, through direct injection into the internal grid, without batteries initially; however, it is being considered to couple it with complementary systems in the future.
