Itaipu invested more than US$ 39.4 million in works and social actions in Alto Paraná

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Itaipu Binacional carried out social actions, projects and large-scale works in Alto Paraná. In just over two years, it allocated a total of 39,478,005 dollars to support health, sanitation and the local road network in the region, in addition to the electrical system, education, rural development and social management.

As part of its Strategic Axis “Energy for Development”, its priorities include the health and well-being of more than 7 million Paraguayans, with special emphasis on the areas of influence of the dam, such as the department of Alto Paraná.

In addition, in line with another of its strategic objectives, which is transparency, two years into its administration, it made available to the population consolidated reports of the investments it is carrying out within the framework of its commitment to social responsibility, according to the bulletin sent by Itaipu.

Hospitals, USF and support during pandemic

The Entity took into account the needs of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (Mspybs) to improve health care in Alto Paraná, which includes the revitalization of reference hospitals and the construction of 23 new Family Health Units (USF), and support during the health emergency due to the covid-19 pandemic, allocating a budget of 84,964 million guaraníes out of the 39,478,005 dollars (more than 252,659 million guaraníes) for these health works.

Regarding assistance in the face of the pandemic, the Paraguayan side of the Binational, unlike Brazil, which concentrates its resources in the area of ​​influence of the hydroelectric plant, supported the decisions of the Government of our country so that said resources are channeled through the Public Health portfolio.

As the institution that leads and coordinates actions aimed at mitigating the effects of Covid-19, the Ministry of Health is responsible for distributing equipment and supplies to emergency hospitals and health centers in different localities, giving priority to those located in the departmental capitals.

The efforts made by Itaipu through the Tesãi Foundation are also coordinated with Public Health to improve the quality of life of the population.

For the strengthening of roads in Alto Paraná, the Binational allocated an investment of 128,887 million guaraníes, which allowed the implementation of improvements to avenues and streets in urban areas of the main districts of Alto Paraná, as well as the construction of the Multiviaduct at km 7 of Ciudad del Este, which is currently underway.

Other works

In addition to the projects already mentioned, Itaipu invested 14.079 million guaraníes in civil works. It also promoted other initiatives to strengthen the electrical system for a value of 328.7 million guaraníes, in order to improve the service to users of the tenth department. For the development of the rural sector, the investment was more than 6.738 million guaraníes and for the educational area, 46 million guaraníes. For social actions undertaken, with a sustainability criterion, a budget of 4.565 million guaraníes was allocated.

The provision of drinking water systems and their improvement to provide this vital liquid to the inhabitants of several districts is another priority action of the Entity, for which it allocated an amount of 13,048 million guaraníes.

The Binational is committed to ensuring the supply of electricity in the midst of a health emergency, considering that the hydroelectric plant meets more than 85% of the country’s electricity demand. It will also continue to support the Government’s actions aimed at the socioeconomic development of the tenth department.
