Asunción, IP Agency.- On May 5, 1984, the first 50 Hz turbine of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant began its operation to generate energy uninterruptedly for 40 years.
Since that date, Itaipu Binacional broke generation records in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2013 consecutively; and on March 10 of this year it reached 3,000 million MWh of accumulated production, which positions it as a world leader in hydroelectric energy generation.
On the same day that the first turbine began operations, May 5, 1984, the first synchronization with the electrical system of the National Electricity Administration (ANDE) was successfully carried out, operating with a capacity of 200,000 kW on an experimental basis that Later it was used to feed the National Interconnected System (SIN).
The same year, the start of operations of the second generating unit was achieved in September. By October 1984, the San Roque substation in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was reached, thus beginning the supply of Itaipu energy to this city.
Technology development
The Itaipu Paraguayan side provided more details regarding the technology used at that time. It was analog technology, without computer programs.
The technicians and engineers of the Hydroelectric Plant developed their own operation and maintenance system to control all the machines, like all Brazilian hydroelectric plants.
In this way, in October 1984 the technical and operational conditions were in place for the hydroelectric use of ITAIPU, initially having two 50 Hz generating units, with a total capacity of 1,400,000 kW, to simultaneously feed the electrical systems of Paraguay. and Brazil.
Installed capacity of 14,000 MW
The 18 Itaipu generating units were installed at a rate of two to three per year. The hydroelectric plant currently has an installed capacity of 14,000 MW (megawatts) with 18 machines working, plus two in reserve. Throughout the four decades, the transmission system of the 50 and 60 kV lines associated with Itaipu was also completed.
