Asunción, IP Agency.- The gates of the Itaipu Binacional landfill were closed this Monday, April 3, following 80 days of operation to control the volume of water stored in the dam.
The landfill remained open since January 14 and was the main attraction and the most requested for tourist visits.
In its first weekend, more than 4,000 people visited the show and by the end of January some 7,000 people agreed to transfers to the Itaipu Binacional viewpoint.
The maximum discharge was 12,361 m3 per second, on February 19, when two gutters of the spillway were opened. The rest of the days the open gutter remained open uninterruptedly.
The maneuver spilled 1,446 m3/s to control the volume stored inside the dam. The last time such an operation was carried out was in October 2021.
The discharge is due to the storage conditions of the reservoirs and the recovery of the flow levels. The last operation with this long period of time was in May 2011.
The spillway may eventually open intermittently to control the volume of the reservoir, since it is currently at its maximum capacity given the above-average rainfall upstream of Itaipu Binacional.
