Itaipu Fire Department provides support to put out building fire in Ciudad del Este

Asunción, IP Agency.- Since yesterday, Monday, personnel from the Itaipu Fire Department have been providing support to the efforts to extinguish the fire that occurred in a central building in Ciudad del Este. Together with their volunteer peers, for more than 24 hours the rescuers have been intensifying the tasks of cooling the fire, in order to completely control the incident.

Christian Marín, coordinator of the Binational Fire Department, explained that the Entity provides support with vehicles and different types of special equipment, such as breathing cylinders, which are recharged for all personnel who enter confined spaces. He specified that Itaipu’s response was immediate following the request for support from the different volunteer bodies in the area.

“The mobile phones with which we are currently working on the fire have the capacity to carry breathing air, which is the element used by the cylinders that are carried by firefighters on their backs, to be able to breathe and carry out the work. Itaipu has this equipment that is very necessary for this type of intervention,” commented Marín.

Among other points, he reported that the incident, in some way, is controlled and that the current work consists of cooling the structure. He also expressed that the Entity, since its inception, has provided this type of cooperation in emergency cases.

“It is common for Itaipu to provide this type of service to all fire departments that request it. Whatever the type of service, be it fire, rescue, aquatic services, diving, we are always available to citizens to collaborate in everything we can,” he stated.

The origin of the fire is unknown at this time. Citizens are urged to avoid driving around the building due to the danger of the structure collapsing and other factors.

Health Ambulances

Ambulances from the Fundación Tesãi are working hard with volunteer firefighters and from Itaipu as support and assistance in the tasks of suppressing the flames of the building under construction, Itaipu reported.

Several people who were in the area of the accident were treated for inhalation of toxic smoke, and transferred to Area 2 Hospital, according to Eliceo Cabrera, head of Out-of-Hospital Emergencies.

Both the ambulance units and the units of the Itaipu Fire Department are on maximum alert to provide support, in accordance with the instructions of the Paraguayan general director of the Binacional, Justo Zacarías Irún.
