Work on the new Astronomical Center begins, with delivery scheduled for 2025
Work is underway in Foz do Iguaçu on the new Astronomical Center, a space for popularizing science, under the management of the Itaipu Technological Park. With a total of 670.92 m² in built area, the new structure will receive state-of-the-art equipment.
New structure, built at the Itaipu Ecomuseum, will provide tourists and the local community with astronomical, scientific and educational experiences.
Located at the Itaipu Ecomuseum, the new Astronomical Center will welcome, in addition to teachers and students, tourists from various parts of the world interested in understanding more regarding astronomy and science. The Astronomical Center began operating at the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI), in 2009, where it remained until 2020, with the aim of promoting scientific dissemination, astronomy education and research.
The update includes the installation of a new planetarium with detailed projections of stars, galaxies and planets. At the observatory, a telescope with greater range and power will guarantee the visualization of celestial bodies that orbit space.
The forecast for the end of the works at the Astronomical Center
Construction work on the new Astronomical Center began in 2023, and was contracted together with the construction of a new attraction in the Ecomuseum complex, Itaipu Energia, which totals 2,268.88 m² of building. In total, adding the financial contributions from PTI and Itaipu Binacional, there are approximately R$18 million in investment in the structures. The physical construction of the Polo is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2025. After the installation of the equipment, it is expected to open to the public during the high season of the same year.
Why build a new space for the Astronomical Center? — According to PTI’s infrastructure and general services manager, Rudi Eduardo Paetzold, the new physical structure was necessary to accommodate the new equipment, as well as comply with current fire and panic prevention and combat regulations.
PTI tourism director, Yuri Benites, states that the initiative to incorporate the Astronomical Pole into the Itaipu Ecomuseum space precisely aims to bring the site closer to the community and visitors. “The reopening of the attraction aims to optimize the visitor experience, who upon arriving at the structure have the opportunity to visit two attractions: the Ecomuseum and the Astronomical Center. The combination of spaces aims to attract a wider audience, both astronomy enthusiasts and those interested in environmental themes and sustainability. Furthermore, the union allows for joint events to be held, such as lectures, workshops or astronomical observations related to celestial phenomena.”
Scientific culture
The Astronomical Hub, in addition to encouraging people’s interest in space science, will also play an important role in promoting the scientific culture of the triple border. This statement was made by the superintendent director of PTI, Professor Irineu Colombo. “The new space will enable students and teachers to have access to this technology to promote knowledge and learning and also develop research in the area. With this, we reaffirm our mission to develop projects and actions to transform knowledge and innovation into social well-being,” he stated.
