HJØRRING: The fact that challenges arise following commissioning that might not have been foreseen when construction was underway is nothing new in the construction industry.
And that is what has happened to Kornets Hus. The iconic building was inaugurated in June 2021 and is a knowledge and experience center for grain and food culture.
The building is built with some very special and beautiful roof tiles – cover tiles – and what was not anticipated was that the sand from the fields that form the surroundings of Kornets Hus can penetrate under the roof tiles and pile up so that the water cannot run away on the underside of the tile.

– Normally, roof tiles lie on top of each other, but here they lie next to each other. We haven’t tried that before, and so we just have to take it on ourselves, says Karl Erik Slynge, Group CEO of A/S Trigon.
The company, which was the general contractor for the construction of Kornets Hus, has therefore immediately set regarding making a plan to rectify the problem.
This is done by lifting the tile on the sloping sides, following which more space is created for the water to run away on the underside. At the same time, the possibility is also created that the sand can be continually cleaned away from the fields if necessary.
– We are responsible for the construction as a general contractor, so we take on the task, says Karl Erik Slynge. Private photo
Karl Erik Slynge does not yet know exactly what the work will amount to, but he believes that it will cost A/S Trigon around one million kroner, mostly in working time.

Work on changing the four sloping roof sides will soon begin. You take one page at a time, and work is not an obstacle to visiting Kornets Hus.

– We have set a period until the summer holidays, then we would like to be finished, says the director, who states that around four to five craftsmen will be assigned to the case – depending on the task.
The roof tiles will be reusable, while the roofing felt and battens must be replaced.
– As the architect designed the house, it was not possible to get behind the bricks and see what it looked like, but we are making it so now that we can unscrew a brick and look inside. From now on, it must be checked just as the gutters must be on an ordinary house, says Karl Erik Slynge.
The architects at Kornets Hus are the Norwegian design studio Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter.
