Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib delivered a speech at the Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East, saying: “In the past months, Lebanese officials have received several warnings regarding the danger of the war expanding to Lebanon, and we have also heard dozens of statements issued by senior Israeli officials threatening to burn Lebanon, destroy it, and return it to the Stone Age.”
Abdullah Bou Habib stressed: “We renew our warning once morest miscalculation, playing on the edge of the abyss, and dragging the entire region into a major explosion. From this platform, we reiterate our rejection of war and our tireless efforts through our contacts and meetings to avoid falling into the trap of Israeli recklessness that seeks to continue the war and expand its geographical scope.”
He added: “If the war breaks out, it will shake the entire Middle East, will be trans-geographical, and will lead to a new displacement crisis that will not spare Europe, not only from Lebanon and Israel, but also from neighboring countries, fleeing missiles, drones, and warplanes.”
He added: “In the Security Council session held on January 23 on the situation in the Middle East, we presented an integrated framework to establish sustainable calm on Lebanon’s southern borders, and today we reiterate our call for a ceasefire to move forward towards the full and undiminished implementation of the Security Council resolution.”
Bou Habib pointed out that “the use of double standards and the adoption of double standards in the application of international laws and resolutions, especially those issued by the United Nations General Assembly, the Security Council, and specialized international organizations, constitute an existential challenge to our global system, its foundations and pillars.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Lebanese counterpart Abdullah Bou Habib discussed the events in the Gaza Strip and their impact on the situation in southern Lebanon. They also stressed Russia’s firm position in support of the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Lebanese Republic, and the need to quickly find consensual solutions to the difficult issues on the agenda by the Lebanese themselves, without external interference.
