“It wasn’t you, you couldn’t control yourself” –

The words leaked from the first prison conversation between the inmate Filippo Turetta and his parents are causing discussion. The father and mother of the Venetian boy on trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin are trying to support their son and push him to look to the future despite an almost certain conviction. The weekly Giallo reported them, also publishing the photo of the meeting in the interview room of the Verona Montorio prison. The sentences were intercepted by the investigators’ bugs and have been filed in the proceedings against the Venetian student.

Makes Giulia feel guilty: Morvillo reveals Turetta's strategy

But what do Nicola Turetta and Elisabetta Martini say to their son? The meeting takes place on December 3, it is the first time they see each other after the separation with Giulia, the atrocious crime of the girl and the escape ended in Germany. “Well, okay, you did something, but you are not a mafioso, you are not someone who kills people, you had a moment of weakness… – says the father – That’s it! You are not a terrorist, I mean… You have to be strong. You are not the only one… There were many others… But you have to graduate”.

And again: “There are 200 more femicides! Then you will have permission to go out, to go to work, conditional freedom. It wasn’t you, you shouldn’t blame yourself because you couldn’t control yourself”, is one of the passages of the conversation. In the meeting Turetta explains that the magistrates with him are “better than I expected” but he fears being abandoned by his lawyer Giovanni Caruso because he can’t “tell him everything”. At that point his parents advise him to tell his lawyer everything.

Turetta goes straight to trial and waives psychiatric assessment

The Corriere della sera reports the comments of acquaintances of Nicola Turetta. “He tried to save his son, so that he would not despair too much, to avoid him from committing an ill-advised act”. In those days there was talk of the possibility of Turetta’s self-harming acts in prison. The boy, among other things, is said to have asked his father if he was fired because of him.
