The most famous multiplayer map of the Call of Duty saga was not to see the light of day! But there was this happy accident!

Shipment is an accident!

We all have our favorite multiplayer map! The one we want to find from one Call of Duty episode to another, but we have to recognize it, some maps are much more essential than others… and strangely, Shipment is one of them! Why “oddly”? It’s simple, this map that offers you to face many opponents through a field of containers was simply not intended to be a multiplayer map.

Recently, it was during an interview conducted by Dexterto that the developers of Call of Duty confessed that the arrival of the Shipment map in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was simply a happy accident.

There are small happy experiences. Things that worked, things that didn’t for one reason or another. I think the bane of my existence is Shipment. Geoff Smith, Multiplayer Design Director

In effect, the developers at Infinity Ward did not plan to deploy the Shipment map in the final version of the game ; it’s even quite the opposite. Originally, the map was supposed to be removed before the title was released, but the multiplayer director at the time simply forgot to remove the map.

Our multiplayer manager at the time when the game went live forgot to withdraw (Shipment) and there was no going back. It really was an accident. Geoff Smith, Multiplayer Design Director

A map designed for testing!

Originally, and as you can imagine, the little playground that is Shipment was designed to perform in-house testing, and thus verify that all the mechanics put in place in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare work. This map was then to be kept only in the final game for the “split screen” mode. It must be said that the smallness of the map, and these many passages is ideal for 1 against 1 sessions.

Today, therefore, Shipment is quite simply one of the most emblematic cards in the series. And as proof, in addition to being available in several flagship episodes, many players have decided to re-appropriate it, starting with MistJawaYT who has decided to reproduce several maps in Fortnite, including Rust and of course Shipment (which earned him a small sanction from Activision).
