Tahiti, November 24, 2023 – The artistic conservatory of French Polynesia closed its 24th international traditional arts workshop this Friday at the Faa’a Hilton. An edition which brought together more than 50 students mainly from Mexico, the United States and Chile.
The artistic conservatory of French Polynesia – Te Fare ‘Upa Rau organized its 24th international traditional arts course from Monday November 20 to Friday November 24. An event which, since 2009, continues to arouse the interest of all ‘ori tahiti enthusiasts around the world. This year, more than 50 students made the trip. Delegations came mainly from Mexico, the United States and Chile. The opportunity for lovers of Polynesian culture to learn ‘ori Tahiti, but also ‘ukulele and the art of hīmene tumu.
“It was a chance to be here and learn from the Tahitians themselves,” declared Suzana, a dancer from ‘ori i Tahiti originally from Chile. “Polynesian dance is unique, there is a grace that emerges from Tahitian dancers that is not found anywhere else. And then the instruments, the music, it’s powerful. There is something that is created in us to the sound of tō’ere”, she clarified. And if obviously, we might observe among the trainees a good number of imperfections in the gestures, it was clear that the spirit was there: crowns of flowers, pāreu and smiles on their lips proudly displayed with end to end of the service. An implication that commanded respect.
And the interns didn’t make the trip for nothing. In addition to the international course, they have the opportunity to enjoy during this period the Hura Tapairu, from November 22 to December 2 at the grand theater of the Maison de la culture, as well as the world championship of ‘ori tahiti solo organized at the Hotel Le Tahiti from November 25 to 26.
