Mr. Lekkas referred to the strong earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale, east of Strofadis, speaking on OPEN’s morning show, “Now Together”.
The professor emphasized that “with today’s data, it seems that it was the main earthquake. There was a set of aftershocks after the 5.7. We see that the situation calms down, defuses. Even if we had a bigger earthquake we wouldn’t have any effects because the epicenter is far away from populated areas.”
“A larger earthquake in this area would have no impact and there should be no concern. We are monitoring the phenomenon. Everything went well,” he added.
“There is reasonable reflection and a different point of view. I will not go into that process. My goal is for opinions to converge. This is what we do through the committees. It is this area of high seismicity but fortunately these faults are far from the cities. At a very long distance”, emphasized Efthymios Lekkas, refusing to take part in the controversy between the scientists.
Regarding whether he is concerned about any region of Greece in which a strong earthquake may occur, Mr. Lekkas stated that in every region there must be seismic safety, primary control and specific operational actions.
“Through this process we are stronger and more ready,” added the president of the OASP.
