A pathology that is difficult to detect

For different reasons, le diagnostic bipolar disorder is unclear.

Indeed, the different episodes linked to bipolar disorder do not manifest themselves in the same way, as explained by the High Authority for Health (HAS): “The depressive episodes are predominant and more numerous while the episodes of mania – and especially of hypomania – (agitation, elevation of mood, ideas of grandeur) can go unnoticed by the doctor as well as by the patient who suffers them. »

Bipolar disorder is also a sickness which begins early, in adolescence, and which can be associated with other psychiatric pathologies (addiction, anxiety disorders, conduct disorders) or be confused with schizophrenia for example.

“In addition to promoting the risks associated with the disease such as suicide, hospitalizations or comorbidities, a diagnostic tardif can also have disastrous consequences on the social, family and professional life of patients,” adds the HAS.

It is estimated that it flows on average 10 ans between the onset of bipolar disorder and the implementation of appropriate treatment.

Bipolar disorder increases the risk of premature death by 6 times

A recent study published in the BMJ Mental Health showed that people with bipolar disorder are six times more at risk of premature death linked to external factors such as suicide, accidents or violence compared to people not affected by this pathology.

The medical registers of 47,018 Finnish people aged 15 to 64 and suffering from bipolar disorder were thus analyzed over the period 2004-2018.

3,300 people composing the panel are deceased in the period followed compared to 141,536 in the total Finnish population.

61% of people in the cohort died for somatic causes with alcohol at 29%, and 39% died for external causes such as suicide at 58%.

This represents a 6-fold increased risk of external death and a 2-fold increased risk for somatic causes compared to the total Finnish population.
