An unexpected moment involving a car operated by Cruise, the robotaxis company operated by GM, in San Francisco, USA, went viral on Twitter. The vehicle got stuck in an almost empty intersection, indicating that there was a failure in the autonomous driving system. The video caught the attention of Tesla owner Elon Musk, who criticized the situation.

Initially, the user @stevenmarkryan shared the video mocking the situation as follows:

Widespread autonomy (see Tesla) is 100 times harder than the flimsy “self-driving” technology we see here.

Does everything match perfectly with the HD pre-map? “Great, I can do the party trick and take you around.”

Does something not match?

“Help me daddy, I’m scared. What do I do? Come get me.”

In addition, the user stated that the self-driving technologies used by other companies are “extremely shallow, weak and with potato IQ” compared to the one created by Tesla.

Commenting on the post with the video on Twitter, Musk said:

Yes, extremely weak for local conditions and does not scale.

Explaining better, the expression “does not scale” means that the technology in question is not able to adapt to the environment, which seems to have happened with the Chevrolet Bolt from Cruise shown in the video.

Musk even said he plans to license Tesla’s Autopilot self-driving system to other automakers:

Tesla aspires to be as helpful as possible to other automakers. We have made all our patents available free of charge for several years. We are now allowing other companies to use our Supercharger network. I’m also happy to license Autopilot/FSD or other technology from Tesla.

On the other hand, it must be remembered that the Autopilot system also suffered from some problems that resulted in 23 accidents for which the company is being investigated. Despite this, the automaker continues to say that its system is safe and Cruise says the same, noting that 240 of its cars run without a driver 24 hours a day in the US.
