The conflict between the owner of the house and the bird must be prevented as early as possible and a situation must be created so that the birds do not build a nest in a place unsuitable for humans. For example, crows and seagulls are already looking for a suitable nesting place, which is why it is the right time to inspect the building and, if necessary, prevent birds from accessing it.

Eike Tammekänd, head of the Nature Conservation Works Office of the Environmental Board, said that the building should be inspected before the start of the bird nesting season because disturbing the birds during nesting is unethical and prohibited by law, as raising young is the most important and sensitive period for them. “The homeowner should inspect and, if necessary, prevent birds from accessing the roof, attic, balconies, eaves, and also critically inspect the entire building in progress or, for example, a warehouse. This should be done especially thoroughly if it is known that the roof or siding of the house is planned to be changed in the spring or summer,” explained Tammekänd.

Humans should interfere with the natural life cycle of nature as little as possible, and birds are a natural part of the urban environment. Intervention is justified only for the protection of human health or property. Eike Tammekänd recalled that it is best if birds do not make a nest in a place unsuitable for humans and can find a more suitable place early on. “However, if there are already eggs and/or chicks in the nest, you should stay away from them and wait until the chicks are big enough to leave the nest. If you go to disturb or remove the chicks, this is a strong signal to the bird parents that the person is dangerous and the number of individuals attacking people will increase. If there is no negative experience with people, seagulls, for example, peacefully raise their young and leave,” explained Tammekänd.

Over the years, the most problems have been with seagulls and crows, who attack people to protect their young. Eike Tammekänd said that a walking baby seagull or crow is normal in the settlement, it is a part of his growing up, and a person does not have to interfere in his activities in any way. “If the baby bird’s parents consistently attack people and the bird’s nest is in a completely inappropriate place, for example in the yard of a kindergarten, you have to try to lead the baby bird away from human paths, where the parents don’t have to constantly protect it,” said Tammekänd.

Practical advice:

  • Cover with netting or repair any openings and holes in the house eaves and elsewhere before the birds arrive.
  • Keep your roof clean of debris and other possible nesting material, check the roof often. Do not store unnecessary items on the flat roof and balcony.
  • If necessary, use suitable deterrents even before nesting begins, for example images of birds of prey, kites floating on the end of a rod, balls resembling eyes, etc. Vary them because the birds get used to them quickly.
  • In the case of flat roofs, the roof must be cleaned early of twigs, which are suitable nesting material for seagulls. The roof must be visited daily and possible nests must be cleaned, at the same time giving the birds a signal by walking on the roof that it is not a suitable nesting place.
  • Birds such as crows, jackdaws and seagulls are also attracted to nest near humans by easily available food. It is definitely not worth feeding them. Trash cans must also be kept closed and compost must be collected in a closed composter.
  • If nesting birds don’t bother you, let them do it in peace. Birds live with us in settlements and do not move away, because there is suitable food, security and nesting places nearby.
