It is useless to take 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy, 4,000 are enough

Take 10,000 steps a day, some make it a real goal. For a long time, doctors advised to reach this figure on a daily basis to maintain good health. But according to a study by Polish and American researchers, it would not be necessary to do the same, reports the BBC.

According to them, less than 5,000 steps a day would be enough. The researchers carried out large-scale tests, on 226,000 people all over the world. They demonstrated that 4,000 steps daily already reduced the risk of premature death. Even 2,300 steps a day would be enough to preserve the heart and blood vessels, relays Slate.

Lower the risk of premature death

All ages and genders are affected, although those under 60 get better results. “Of course, the more you walk, the greater the benefits,” the researchers qualify. Indeed, between 4,000 and 20,000 steps per day, each additional thousand would reduce the risk of premature death by 15%.

Walking is known to lower blood pressure, strengthen the body, induce the production of endorphins and be good for morale. It does not cause joint or muscle damage. On the contrary, the lack of exercise would have a real negative impact on health.

“Staying too long can slow down your metabolism, affect your muscle growth and physical strength, or cause you pain,” points out a trainer interviewed by the BBC. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lack of physical activity causes 3.2 million deaths each year: it is the fourth most common cause of death in the world.
