it is up to 18% less efficient than the original

The GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB and 8 GB compete in 12 games, in Full HD and 1440p. The two graphics cards deliver a very different average number of frames per second…

NVIDIA and its partners have been offering for a few weeks new variants of GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and GeForce RTX 3060. The first, called Ti Plus by some manufacturers, benefits from GDDR6X memory, logically improving its performance. The second, on the other hand, lost out, swapping its 12 GB for 8, which is no longer used via a 128-bit memory bus instead of 192 bits. As a result, the memory bandwidth drops to 240 GB/s once morest 360 GB/s for the GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB. The Hardware Unboxed channel offers a test of this benchmark.

The author of the channel compared the performance of several GPUs, including the two aforementioned, in 12 games, including Dying Light 2, Cyberpunk 2077 or Halo Infinite, at 1080p and 1440p. He took care not to saturate the 8 GB of VRAM so as not to artificially distort the results. And these are final: the GeForce RTX 3060 8 GB offers an average number of frames per second 17% and 18% lower than the GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB in 1080p and 1440p respectively. In this latest definition, while the GeForce RTX 3060 as we know it so far rivals the Radeon RX 6600 XT from AMD, the new version does slightly worse than the Radeon RX 6600.

The GeForce RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X will gradually supplant the GDDR6 version

Slightly lower prices in France, but not correlated with performance

The channel’s author calls the GeForce RTX 3060 8GB a “horrible anti-consumer maneuver by NVIDIA”. The title of the video is self-explanatory: 8 GB RTX 3060 – Same Name, Same Price, Less Performance. However, we will be slightly more measured, the GeForce RTX 3060 8 GB being sold a little cheaper at retailers like LDLC or TopAchat. Afterwards, for sometimes only 20 euros difference, there is actually no need to think very long regarding the model to be preferred.
