Mike Skinner, a virologist at Imperial College London, explained of the disease, saying: “Sexual contact by its nature involves close intimate contact, which one would expect to increase the likelihood of transmission, regardless of one’s sexual orientation and type of transmission.”
European Health: The epidemic is high in “certain groups”
For its part, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (European Health Agency) said the risk of monkeypox spreading in the general population was “very low” but high in certain groups, apparently referring to homosexuals.
Andrea Amon, director of the European Health Agency, said that “most of the current cases were accompanied by mild symptoms of disease, and for the public, the probability of spread is very low.”
She added that the possibility of the virus spreading through close contact between people with multiple sexual partners was considered “high”.
Monkeypox belongs to the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, but it causes milder symptoms. Most patients have fever, body aches, chills, and fatigue. People with a more severe level of the disease may develop a rash and blisters on the face and hands that can spread to other parts. from the body.
Most of the detected cases involve men who have had sex with men in Europe. Cases have been reported in Britain, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
