“It is the bittersweet decision”

The tennis player Roger Federer announced his retirement from major tennis competitions. The Swiss says goodbye to the greats of white sport at 41 years old.

“I will continue to play tennis in the future, of course, but not in Grand Slams or on the ATP Tour anymore. It is the most bittersweet decision because I will miss everything that the tour has given me. At the same time, there is much to celebrate,” he said.

On his Instagram account, the athlete published a letter in which he thanked his sponsors and colleagues against whom he competed in his 17-year professional career and said he felt “very lucky to be in epic matches that I will never forget.”

Federer’s last high-level competition will be at the Laver Cup in London, which will take place from September 23-25. Federer, with 20 Grand Slam titles, He shares with the Serbian Novak Djokovic (21) and Rafael Nadal (22) the top three of the historic world tennis.

In the four-page letter, the tennis player reflected on his state of health and was honest in communicating that after the injuries he has suffered in recent years, he understood the signs of his body.

“As many know, the last three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I have worked hard to get back to full racing, but I know my body’s capabilities and my limits and the message for me lately has been clear. I have 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches in 24 years, ”she assured.

In what is already understood as a definitive farewell to the brick courts, the Swiss thanked his followers in a special way. “Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever dreamed possible and I know I have to recognize when it’s time to end my competitive career,” he said.
