It is planned to sign the plan for the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania by the end of the year

The Germans promise to establish the initial element of the brigade headquarters in Lithuania next year, the Ministry of National Defense (KAM) announced.

Minister of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas met with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in Brussels on Wednesday and discussed the guidelines for the permanent deployment of this country’s brigade in Lithuania.

“We are happy and appreciate Germany’s historic decision. Today, my colleague Boris presented to the Bundestag the guidelines regarding the permanent deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania. Our ministries are coordinating all the deployment details together so that we can sign the implementation action plan by the end of this year,” said A. Anušauskas.

He asserted that Lithuania is committed to implementing this plan quickly.

“Lithuania will ensure the best possible support of the host country for the German soldiers,” said the minister.

A. Anušauskas assured B. Pistorius that all Lithuanian state institutions agree that creating the best possible conditions for the permanent presence of the brigade in Lithuania is a priority task.

The ministers also discussed further plans for support to Ukraine, training of Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian demining coalition.

Since 2017, Germany has been leading the NATO international allied battalion deployed in Lithuania.

Berlin promises to increase this unit to the size of a brigade, when Lithuania equips the necessary infrastructure to receive soldiers and if it does not conflict with other NATO plans.

The forward command element of the brigade is currently deployed in Lithuania.
