An asteroid larger than the Empire State Building passed 1.1km from Earth last month, reports the Daily Mirror. It was 500 meters high and 150 meters wide, the famous New York tower is 443 meters.
This asteroid was discovered by NASA in 2011. “Continued observations of this object have ruled out any risk of impact, and these new distance measurements made by the planetary radar team will make it possible to refine the exact place where it will be in the distant future,” NASA’s Paul Chodas told the Mirror.
Scientists feared it might hit the ground. “Of the 1,040 near-Earth objects observed by planetary radar to date, this is one of the most elongated we have seen.” Finally, more fear than harm but above all a great chance for scientists to observe this object.
