“It is inexplicable to play a cult character”

Teen Wolf is a series with more than six years on the air, with more than one hundred episodes, they are a legacy that even though recent, is closer to the cult that shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or The X Files have generated. In other words, genre pieces that know how to alter and celebrate it, and that at the same time know how to build characters that play crucial keys of the series format in their two-dimensional dimensions. Today Teen Wolf returns to Paramount +, but it returns as a movie, one that decides to return to classic characters, and that decides to be a party for the fans. Something that might sound strange a few years ago, but now, in this age of franchises, it doesn’t generate so much noise. Tyler Posey was, and is again, Scott McCall, one of the most beloved fantastic characters on the show. Posey himself went from being a teen idol to becoming a creator: “I was lucky to be able to understand over time what we could do, what we did, and returning to this creation is a luxury that I can give myself that I am very grateful for.” Posey, who is also a musician and who has known how to wander through the world of cinema, hand in hand with directors like Kevin Smith, and who, as is well known, is now a filmmaker and artist, spoke exclusively with PROFILE.

—What would you say is what moves you about being part of this pop legacy that “Teen Wolf” implies?

That is a question that has many answers. It is a huge question. And that says a lot about everything I’ve been able to do in this race. Undoubtedly, it is a question that I could even say excites me, because it implies going back to the film we just made, it implies seeing almost a huge part of my professional life, of my growth as a person, as an actor. What I thought I could do and what I finally ended up doing. So, it sounds a bit redundant, but it is not a simple question for me, because the fans, their love, the producers, and their trust, the friends, and the bonds we made, that moment that was unrepeatable, and this moment appear to me. which is a celebration. Few people, although it seems like many, managed to create characters that people really love, that they take with them. And Scott McCall, my character, yesterday and today, is that. I insist, there are so many things that it makes me happy to be able to think of many answers.

“But is there something really close to your heart?”

—Many, but there is one that I would like to delve into and it has to do with my character with Scott McCall. Making a character that people are very touching, much more than words can explain. I love that they want it. I love that people want to find inspiration and motivation in it. I like that many people approach me saying that it changed their lives. I love Scott McCall. I think he says a lot about what fiction can do in our lives, a lot. I don’t think it should be the only thing that you consider can change your life, but it is something absolutely expansive, that shakes you to the last fiber of your being, understanding the power of fiction, and being able to afford to do it from that place, since being someone on the team that tells that story. It is something that I believe, and that luckily lives in my heart.

“Is there anything you feel you know about Scott that no one else in the world knows?”

-That is interesting. How well do you know a fictional character? Even if you feel like it’s your fictional character. It’s something I’ve wondered at times, especially considering this phenomenon. But I have rarely thought about it, but I feel that it is as difficult to answer it as it is to know that there is a part of me that I do not know and want to explain it. That’s how strongly I feel the connection to this character. I do feel that Scott is more sensitive than he lets on, that he is always more in Superman mode, that is, he does not let his weakness be seen, which creates a facade, but not in a sense of evil, but rather that he feels that others They need to see him this strong, and this stoic. I think he’s trying to show that he’s okay, and better than he really is, and that he’s carrying a lot more. That like everyone, he doesn’t really know what he’s doing, that he’s afraid, and that even so, he has to act in a way that allows others to realize that. It’s always easy to think of the cool side of the characters, but giving them humanity, feeling them, is also a way of knowing how to see them. I mean, that each one take what they like about fictional characters, perhaps at this moment I feel more comfortable carrying what they do not show, and that perhaps now from experience I can feel, or intuit, or even delirious, that feel. What else are stories if not that mirror where we can see even what we hate about ourselves but protected, almost without knowing it?

—What was it like going back to a Teen Wolf set? How powerful was that first moment and what was the general feeling on set?

-It was the best. Anyway, I’ll be honest: it’s not that I didn’t want to return to the character, but regardless of whether I wanted to or not, the fans didn’t give me much room for any other option. But I was fascinated by the story, acting again with friends, with new people, I always wanted to play Scott again. Being able to play him again is quite special, I don’t feel like many people have had opportunities like this, to return to characters that are not only beloved but have also defined his career. We are few. I did it when I was a kid, and now I can do it as an adult. It is a minor percentage of this business. And almost indescribable how cool it is. It really is something very difficult to put into words.

—When do you feel that you fell in love with the idea of telling a story?

—Well, it is common knowledge that my dad is an actor, John, and that he is also a screenwriter. He even has been part of the show. By this I mean that I grew up in this world. Dad did plays, so he acted them. I mean, that’s when I discovered what counting was: what it involved as a task, as a job, as a choice of life and what it looked like afterwards. From a very young age I understood behind the scenes. But many may think that this takes away your magic, but quite the opposite. There came a moment, where I saw Desperado, with Antonio Banderas. He walks around the house playing the gunslinger, with water pistols, walking around as cool as Banderas was in that film. I always knew that I loved to count, but then I began to understand that I liked it. When video cameras became popular, I started filming things with my brother. With my dad, I discovered that it was, with Desperado, that I fell in love, and with my brother that I loved doing it. I always loved him, not just acting, but everything: directing, the camera. It is a universe that I love.

Passion for a character

Says Tyler without hesitation: “Above all, he wanted fans to be able to see his beloved character, and see a different person, yet feel the same affection. In the same way that when you meet someone after a long time, you can see everything that has happened, but you can also see, feel, that person who became your friend. For that, what I did was also use my experience, my life, as the basis, as an example, and as today, in addition to being different, but still, I know that I must be more in the moment, less anxious. Scott and I are already so consumed by what is to come or what was. We made peace with our decisions, and we understand that each one has its anchors and its wings, and that our darkness is always there. Now the idea was to show that. Give that to the character. It was a decision of the authors, and it was a decision that made me very happy. Being able to see him understand his life, where he’s going, his role as an alpha werewolf. When he lived in chaos he didn’t have time to do that and now the time has finally come for him.”

The actor adds: “It is a moment, from the cinema, from the series, where we can afford the luxury of returning. Beyond the fans, it has not touched a very special moment of our work. Hopefully many actors can feel what I felt with this return to this character. I hope this moment helps to show different stories, stories that show our diversity and that are also the driving force for new generations of fans. What is happening today with fiction allows us to dream of more possibilities for new stories, for new actors, for new achievements. It is a great moment for our industry and I celebrate it”.
