It is extended to the state sector and limited to the private sector 2024-07-19 08:06:00

Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero announced new measures on Wednesday for the importation of cars into Cuba. On the one hand, the measures are being relaxed for the state sector and the “screws” are being tightened for the private sector. Details below.

According to official media, the Cuban government announced a new policy for the transfer of ownership of cars and other motor vehicles, as well as their marketing and importation, including combustion motorcycles.

Among the new provisions, announced by Marrero, it was established that Motor vehicles and used bodies available in the country will be marketed in national currency.

During his speech, the Prime Minister also noted that there have been “many distortions” in this sector, despite the government’s flexibility in allowing the leasing of transport to different forms of private management.

“That is not prohibited, but the way forward cannot be that state-owned companies, which are responsible for passenger transport, rent out the entire transport system under the excuse that they do not have the resources to buy a tire or a battery,” he said.

Marrero says that not everything can lead to privatization, otherwise prices would rise for “ordinary Cubans” and that is not what is wanted.

More measures on car imports in Cuba

Other measures regarding the importation of cars in Cuba include the possibility of diplomatic personnel, representatives of companies abroad and professionals who participate in collaboration missions abroad, including doctors, purchasing vehicles.

The country will introduce new requirements for the importation of vehicles, as there are people who have purchased cars that require special gasoline, not available in Cuba, which has caused breakdowns.

On the other hand, the country will restrict the number and types of vehicles that private companies can import, because “some vehicles are entering that are not compatible with our society or necessary, and we must also limit the number according to the interests of the country. This is corrected with this new regulation.”

Finally, he clarified that the dates for the implementation of these measures have not been set.
