It is estimated how much the World Hockey Championship in Riga brought to the country’s economy

According to preliminary data, holding the World Hockey Championship in Riga attracted an additional 44 million euros to the country’s economy, the external communications department of the Riga City Council reported.

During the championship, Riga was visited by 30,000 foreign hockey fans, mainly Swiss, Czechs and Slovaks. Although the Group A matches took place in Tampere (Finland), several hundred Finnish fans also traveled to Riga.

“During the championship, the turnover of enterprises increased by an average of 30-50%. Bars and cafes with terraces also received record profits compared to the same period in previous years,” said Oskar Ikstens, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Bar Association.

With the start of the tourist season and the major events that took place in Riga in May – the Riga Marathon and the Ice Hockey World Championship – hotel occupancy rates have also improved significantly. According to preliminary data, the occupancy rate of Riga’s largest hotels in May was 50% higher than in April, reaching pre-pandemic levels.

The championship was covered by more than 150 foreign media outlets, and was broadcast live in more than 70 countries.

The Ice Hockey World Championship was held in Riga and Tampere from May 12 to 28
