  • The Colombian president rejected being asked to take a position by Congress, however, he was open to listening to advice

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said on September 25 that Congress does not have the power to require the president to make decisions regarding international relations in response to the proposal to recognize Edmundo González as the winner of the elections in Venezuela.

Petro’s response to the Senate, through his account on the social network X, comes one day after he was asked to recognize the Venezuelan opposition leader.

“So as not to confuse public opinion, the Colombian Congress, by constitutional order, cannot demand that the president take positions on matters of international policy,” Petro wrote.

The Colombian president added that he would also study the Senate’s proposal before making a decision.

“The proposal is a request and I will study it within the decisions that I have to make, always consulting, above all, the general interest of Colombian society,” Petro said.

The president of New Granada also reiterated that the person constitutionally in charge of the country’s foreign relations is the President of the Republic.

“I invited former presidents and other figures to the foreign relations commission and received advice that I take into account, including from members of Congress who are part of the commission,” Petro added.

What was the proposal of the Colombian Senate?

The Colombian Senate has approved a proposal to recognize Edmundo González as the legitimate winner of the July 28 elections in Venezuela.

The news was announced by Senator Miguel Uribe on his X account on Tuesday, September 24.

“We request that the government recognize the figure of the legitimate winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela, Edmundo González, who represents the true will of the Venezuelan people,” part of the document stated.

With this proposal, the legislative body urged Colombian President Gustavo Petro to recognize González’s victory.

“I am pleased that today, the Colombian Senate is in tune with world democracy. We join the congresses that defend democracy and freedom,” said Senator Miguel Uribe in his statements.

Other recognitions for Edmundo González

Congresses and senates of several countries have recognized the electoral “victory” of Edmundo González. For example, on September 11, Congress of Spain approved the recognition of the opposition as “elected and legitimate president of Venezuela.”

The decision of the Spanish Congress was approved with 177 votes in favour, 164 against and one abstention. The parliamentarians voted in favour of a proposal from the Popular Party (PP) to urge the Spanish government to recognise González. The decision is not binding and has symbolic value.

For its part, the European Parliament On September 19, the European Parliament recognized Edmundo González as the legitimate and democratically elected president of Venezuela, in a non-binding text that was approved with the yes of the European People’s Party, the ultraconservatives and the right.

On September 21, Ben Cardin, chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced that he will introduce a Bill to recognize Gonzalez as the winner of the Venezuelan elections and sanction the government of Nicolás Maduro.
