Second Lieutenant Lefteris Petrounias, took the oath under the gaze of his wife Vasilikis Millousis and their children and reported on social media: “Grade: First Lieutenant! I feel very honored for the inclusion of the Olympians in the family of the armed forces! We are all happy for the recognition of our efforts!”. The Olympic rowing gold medalist in Tokyo, Stefanos Douskos, wrote regarding the swearing in: “With a sense of deep honor I announce today my joining as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry of the Greek Army. The Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias was present at the swearing-in ceremony of the reservists in action of Olympian officers in the Armed Forces Officers’ Club (LAED).
The Deputy Minister of National Defense Yiannis Kefalogiannis and the Deputy Minister of Education, Religion and Sports Yiannis Vroutsis gave the “present” at the swearing-in of the Olympians.
Among the athletes who took the oath were the Olympic champion in hoops Lefteris Petrounias, Miltos Tentoglou of the long jump, Sofia Papadopoulou in sailing, the captain of the national polo Yiannis Fundoulis.
“Today we honor our Olympians who were sworn Officers of the Armed Forces, as a source of inspiration, with their performance and their talent. The distinctions they have achieved reflect dedication and continuous effort and are a model for society as a whole” said Nikos Dendias.
For his part, Yannis Vroutsis noted: “They will serve the army and the Motherland with the same dedication and the same values that through Sports raised the Greek flag as high as possible, making us proud and advertising Greece to the ends of the world . The State gives our Olympians the maximum honor, as they deserve.
