A “historic achievement”, as it was described by the municipality of Fernández Oro the acquisition of the lands that are located on the coast of the Negro River. It is more than six kilometers of coastline that will be transformed into a large provincial reserve, where the largest coastal walk in Patagonia will be located. According to unofficial reports, it might be used as a spa during the summer season.

At the beginning of this week, a resolution was announced that converted the 48 hectares in the riverside area of Fernández Oro into public lands belonging to the municipality. The opinion was made by the Provincial Water Department.

From what they detailed to the city, from this fact, they belong to it more than 270 thousand trees and more than 6 kilometers of coastline on the Negro River. «In this way, the locality now has one of the largest Coastal Parks in Patagonia«They assured from the municipality. Furthermore, they characterized this event as a “historic achievement.”

The riverside lands were occupied by a private company more than 25 years ago, which had advanced on the hectares of public domain, placing fences in the place. As well as throwing garbage into a stream to avoid its course.

“We are ensuring the preservation of the place, in principle by the restoration of the stream that had been covered by the company in order to expand its land,” said Pablo Fica, Representative of the NGO Friends of the River.

In addition, he explained that the place was being mistreated«the cutting of the stream made the forest dry, “Now we are waiting for the arrival of a municipal machine to finish cleaning it so that it can maintain its course throughout the year,” he explained.

The beginnings of the recovery of these lands took place in December 2022 when the province’s Water Code allowed entry to the site. In July of this year, the DPA established the bank line on this stream as stipulated by Law 2952. «In recent days, one of the three artificial embankments that private companies built on this arm of the Negro River was removed.«, they described from the municipal Executive at that time.

The project sought to create a space in which Educational circuits, hiking, astrotourism and bird watching can be carried out. In addition, “the aim is to recover the conditions in which the area was found before the company settled so that it is a sustainable space for the neighbors and thus promote tourism and offer something different from what other cities offer,” he added. Fica.

“This event marks a precedent in the fight for access to water and the preservation of our natural resources,” the local government highlighted.

The work was carried out by the NGO “Friends of the River” represented by Gisella Quiroga and Pablo Ficatogether with the Cabinet Coordinator, Martin Rebaliatti, the Local Misdemeanor Judge, Valeria Fernandez and the Director of Sustainable Development and General Inspection, Javier Arroyo.

Fernández Oro Coastal Walk: How it will work

The Ecological Coastal Walk It is located on Criollita street in the background, passing National Route 22. From the NGO “Friends of the River” they described that it is “an area suitable for the residents of Fernández Oro and the area enjoy the full right to a healthy and balanced environment«.

The main objective of its creation is to provide the community with a space for recreation and leisure. It also seeks to maintain the care of the existing vegetation in the area, meeting the social, ecological and tourist objectives of the city.

Paseo Costero de Fernández Oro: might be used as a spa

Before the creation of the coastal promenade, a doubt arises among the neighbors: Could it be used as a spa during the summer season? The answer is “yes”, but with some caveats.

The reference of the NGO explained that at the moment the work is focused on converting the coastal promenade into a provincial reserve with municipal management. This would allow the presence of wildlife guards to protect the place.

«We had a meeting with the elected mayor Gustavo Amatti, and with the provincial Secretary of the Environment, Dina Migani, to move forward with this request, They told us that the project must first be presented for it to be a provincial reserve in the legislature. That is already underway,” explained Pablo Fica.

Once the presence of wildlife guards is confirmed, progress can be made with the authorization of the place as a spa. According to the NGO, the only thing necessary for this to happen is to hire lifeguards, “The DPA did not inform us of the official values but they explained to us that they were good. Only at some times of the day, closer to noon you had to pay a little more attention.

Furthermore, they stated that The dangerous increase in these values is due to its proximity to Jordan Island.. This area cannot be used as a spa due to the high levels of pollution contained in the river flow.
