Samsung’s foldable phone is expected to appear on the market in another evolved form. This is by implementing a technology that goes beyond the existing method of folding the screen inward and folds it outward as well.

Samsung Display introduced a 360-degree foldable smartphone display at CES2024 held in Las Vegas, USA from the 9th to the 12th (local time). The video posted by the company on its official YouTube channel is also receiving attention from netizens.

Samsung Display explained, “It was too bad to only reveal it at the CES exhibition site, so we prepared a video,” adding, “The product that caught the attention of people who visited the exhibition hall was the ‘Flex In-N-Out Flip.’”

In the 18-second video, a clamshell-shaped smartphone similar to Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z Flip series is first folded inward. The length of the folded side is slightly short, so the top display screen can be viewed even when fully folded. Here you can check the remaining battery level, time, weather, etc.

Soon following, the screen was also shown flipping outward and folding. This is a technology that allows the screen to fold 360 degrees, inward and outward.

The advantage of applying this technology is that more information can be viewed in a folded state with just one display. Through this, it is possible to create products with a lighter and thinner design.

Netizens who watched the video responded, “It’s amazing,” “China can’t match this technology,” and “Please make it the Z Flip 6.”

The evaluation of foreign media is not bad either. CNET, an IT media outlet, explained, “Unlike other flip phones currently on the market, the In-N-Out Flip folds completely backwards, so you can use the 6.7-inch screen without opening the device.” He continued, “If the same screen can be used inside and outside, users can have a consistent experience.” The external screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also large, but since it is a separate screen, you need to set up the apps you want to use separately.

CNET said, “The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr Plus showed the possibility of a smartphone with a secondary screen that fits in the palm of your hand,” and added, “If the Flex In-N-Out Flip concept is applied to an actual product, it will go one step further.”

In addition, Samsung Display unveiled the ‘Flex Note Extendable’ for the first time, which can be used in vehicle interiors. The feature is that the screen can be expanded once more by sliding following unfolding the foldable panel.

Attention is being paid to whether Samsung, which has introduced a variety of foldable technologies, will further expand its influence in the global market if it releases products using them. Samsung Electronics has already established a firm position in the global foldable phone market. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA), as of the third quarter of last year, Samsung Electronics’ global sales of foldable phones were approximately 5,043,000 units, accounting for 75.3% of the market share.

Chinese manufacturers that released products similar to Samsung only had a single-digit market share, including Huawei 7.2%, Motorola 5.8%, and Honor 4.3%.
