Emigration and immigration
Written by Rainer Ackermann
Since 2010, almost 325,000 Hungarians have emigrated. While left-liberal media emphasize that never before have so many Hungarians emigrated as in 2023, a business portal even reads a positive balance of immigration from the same statistics.
The KSH statistics office compiles its annual list of Hungarian migration based on data from the Ministry of the Interior. Left-liberal portals such as 444.hu highlighted in their reporting at the weekend that never before have so many Hungarians emigrated as was the case in 2023. The previous annual record was just under 33,000 people since 2015, but last year 33,700 Hungarians moved away.
Austria the new favorite country
Since 2010, a total of 324,200 Hungarians have set out on the journey, by far most of them settling in Austria, Germany and Great Britain. In the middle of the last decade, Germany was considered the most popular destination country (ahead of the British Isles), but since the corona pandemic at the latest, Austria has clearly taken on this role. Since 2010, a cumulative total of more than 100,000 Hungarians have settled in the neighboring country, slightly fewer in Germany and, according to official figures, only around 50,000 in Great Britain.
The bottom line is a positive balance
The business portal vg.hu takes a more differentiated view of the migration figures. According to this, the net immigration balance is even positive if all Hungarians are taken into account. In the left-liberal media, the emigrants were only compared with the returnees born in Hungary, without taking into account Hungarians born abroad who “returned” to their actual homeland. And that’s 10-15,000 people every year who would probably embezzle for political reasons.
According to vg.hu, only around one thousand more Hungarians emigrated in 2023 than one. Of course, this ended a trend that grew from 2017 to 2022, according to which the domestic population increased by up to 10,000 people every year thanks to a positive immigration balance. Since 2010, a cumulative total of more than 360,000 Hungarians have immigrated. Overall, the migration balance was slightly positive under four Orbán governments in a row.
