They announced it in October 2021, it is now concrete: Aldi has opened an automatic store in Utrecht, as reported by Gondola who was able to visit it before everyone else. This technology-filled store is actually a full-scale test store that will serve the needs of Belgians and Dutch. The reception by the customers, the feedback they will give and the different surface of the Aldi that we know will be studied there in particular.
The Aldi Shop&Go, from its name, covers a commercial area of 370 m2, less than a third of the brand’s standard discount supermarket. But what is interesting is that it is able to accommodate an assortment similar to the stores we know, without the non-food offers!
But what really changes in the store then? It is simply more technological: “475 sensors are installed on the ceiling. Each visitor, to be able to access the store, begins by loading the Shop&Go app on his smartphone, identifies himself by name and e-mail, and then links his account to a credit card, the payment formula chosen today. today, but which might in the future be supplemented by other options. Once listed, he presents his identification QR code to the reading terminal placed at the entrance, which opens the gate to him. From this moment, and although his privacy is protected (there is no biometric trace), he will be followed throughout the store which will automatically detect the items he takes from the shelf. He signals himself at the exit terminal, and voila, he is automatically debited. His receipt? He will receive it on his e-mail box”, explains Gondola very clearly.
You put a product back on the shelf, don’t panic! The sensors see everything!
