“It causes us deep pain”: Association of the Discalced Carmelite nuns regrets statement in favor of the Approval of the monastery of San José de Maipo

Through a statement, 13 monasteries of Las Carmelitas Descalzas -belonging to the Santa Teresa de Los Andes Association- “regretted” the declaration in favor of Approval that the nuns grouped in the Carmelitas Descalzas of San José de Maipo did.

As they say, “the statement issued, causes us deep pain and does not represent the opinion of the Carmelite nuns in Chile. only represents the voice of a monastery, the only one not associated to the 13 monasteries of the Discalced Carmelite nuns in Chile”.

On a second point, the association of nuns states that they regret that “flag with a position regarding which we must pronounce ourselves in the plebiscite of next September 4”.

“As women and citizens, each Carmelite nun, in the exercise of our freedom and in conscience, will decide what is best for Chile, Bearing in mind that as Christians, it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its values, those that should guide us in making decisions for our country, among them we defend life from its conception to its natural death”, the nuns deepen in their writing.

The statement comes following the monastery in the foothills of Santiago issued a statement where they assured through a reflection that “if we reject the proposal of a new Constitution we are rejecting the possibility of taking a big step in the future of our country”.

The new Constitution is perfectible and can be solved with dialogue, respect and good willbut the fundamental thing is that it is constituted as a social state of law”, they assured, causing the rejection of the association that groups the rest of the “Carmelite” monasteries.
