Germany – German investigators confirmed they had seized counterfeit dollar bills with a face value of more than $103 million, which apparently came from Turkey and were stored before being transported to the United States.
The Criminal Police Office in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost part of Germany, reported that officers found 75 cartons of counterfeit dollars during searches of an apartment and the addresses of two companies, following information from the American authorities led them to companies run by a man suspected of having issued counterfeit money to the United States in the past.
Police said in a statement that the banknotes, known as “movie money,” might be identified as counterfeit upon close inspection, but the German central bank and US authorities believe they might be mistaken for real money in circulation during daily life.
German investigators believe the counterfeit notes came from a wholesaler from Turkey, and the suspect was using one of his export companies in Jobbik, near the Danish border, for temporary storage before shipping to the United States.
The suspect is 42 years old and a Turkish citizen. He has not been arrested, but faces investigation under the German anti-counterfeiting law.
