Everything Must Be Subordinated to the Work: The Legacy of István Nemere
Autumn is indeed a time of reflections, but it seems that the autumn leaves are just the backdrop for the cherry on top of an incredible career. Enter István Nemere, a man who has penned 800 books (yes, you heard me right, 800!), and still found a way to throw a party amidst hospital chaos. Talk about living on the edge—it’s like a plot twist straight out of a thriller! Just after mingling with the who’s who of filmmaking at the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival, he’s now celebrating not just another numerically significant birthday but also the publication of his 800th book. You might think he’d take it easy… instead, he winds up in intensive care! Isn’t life just wonderfully ironic?
On Work: The Life Gospel of István Nemere
In his recent interview with boon.hu, István laid down the law like a modern-day prophet. “Everything must be subordinated to work,” he declared, as if to challenge the rest of us mere mortals to keep up. I mean, when you’re looking to become a world record-holding author, it’s not just about passion; it’s sheer fanaticism! But let’s face it, if you want to hit 800, and swiftly collapse into a bed shortly after, you better have your priorities straight between Netflix and, well, not Netflix.
If you’re thinking about ways to become a writer, don’t ask the internet; ask István. His answer is painfully simple: decide and persevere. He’s quite the fan of compulsion, which, joining him on his couch, sounds less like a writer’s journey and more like someone who simply refuses to leave the building. After all, who needs fresh air when you’ve got a manuscript calling your name?
This isn’t just any man lugging around dreams of authorship—this is a writer, translator, and Esperanto enthusiast (yes, that’s a thing—don’t ask why). But let’s not skip over the health drama, shall we? Just as he blew out the candles on his 80th birthday cake—who wouldn’t be grateful for an 800-book accomplishment on that!—he wound up in the ICU. Now that’s what I call an entrance to an encore. I can imagine his doctors blazing into action, thinking they’d have to write their own life stories after dealing with him!
A Writers’ World and the Art of Perseverance
And here’s the kicker; he advocates for perseverance while grappling with this hiccup in his career—because what better proverbial iron to strike than when you have the world watching? Ah, yes, the young writers he mentors, filled with aspirations and wonder, can all now take notes from István, who’s practically a walking motivational poster, even as he’s clinging to the other side of life—quite literally! Talk about commitment! “Those who give up early will not get far,” he advises. With 800 books, you have to wonder if he’s ever considered co-authoring a self-help book—maybe something titled “How to Write Your Way to Oblivion.”
In regards to all these proclamations, one thing stands clear: István’s very essence seems to scream that life is indeed short, but your bibliography can be extensive! So perhaps the next time you feel like lounging about with a box of chocolates binge-watching old sitcoms, remember—there’s an 80-year-old in intensive care fighting for his life while cheering you on to write that next paragraph!
We wish Mr. Nemere all the best in his recovery, and let his story continue to be an inspiration to us all—even the ones who indulge in glorious procrastination. After all, what would our lives be without a little cheek and a lot of hard work?
In autumn the CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival he was the guest of the world’s most prolific writer, His name is Istvánwho gave an interview to boon.hu before the premiere of the documentary about him, which you can read here.

Everything must be subordinated to the work – declared István Nemere
In addition to his work, the writer – who lives in a village in Nyírség with his wife from Borsod – talked about his creed and what his 800th book will be about.
Everything must be subordinated to work. A kind of fanaticism, that’s for sure, with a kind of compulsion to write, or we can call it in many different ways, but for sure it also requires perseverance. Young people often ask me what it takes to become a writer. I always say that you have to make up your mind and persevere, those who give up early will not get far. I was the same way, so I recommend this method. Of course, there are other methods.
As our portal also reported, István Nemere, the writer, translator, Esperantoist, was hospitalized on his 80th birthday and is currently being treated in the intensive care unit. The writer not only celebrated his birthday a few days ago, but also the publication of his 800th book, which is also a world record. He was still very happy then, and within a few hours the doctors were already fighting for his life.
Inspire generations of aspiring writers. Now, let’s dive into a short interview with István Nemere himself, where he shares insights about his incredible journey and the philosophy behind his relentless work ethic.
