Tel Aviv: Israel’s Supreme Court struck down a controversial law passed by the Netanyahu government that overrides the powers of the High Court.
The law, passed in July 2023 to override the judiciary, sparked nationwide protests.
The Act was to remove the Supreme Court’s power to overturn unreasonable decisions of the government and ministers.
Eight out of 15 judges voted in favor of striking down the law, the Supreme Court said.
Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who introduced the law, came out once morest the court ruling. He accused the ruling of being contrary to the unity necessary for the success of soldiers on the battlefield.
Levin said they will continue to campaign for the law regardless of the restrictions and will not be deterred by the ruling.
The opposition, which expressed its happiness at the verdict, accused Netanyahu of creating opportunities for corruption and appointments.
The Supreme Court said in a statement that the law undermines Israel’s democracy.
Al Jazeera reported that the verdict was a heavy blow to Netanyahu and his allies, who argued that the Parliament, not the High Court, should make the final decision on the rule of law and important decisions.
The judges said that the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, does not have omnipotence.
The Netanyahu government wanted to curtail the Supreme Court’s powers, from evaluating parliamentary decisions to appointing judges.
The government argued that its intention was to strengthen democracy by reducing the power of non-elected judges. But the opposition alleged that Netanyahu, who is to be tried in corruption cases, is trying to overthrow the government.
Until the Israeli attack on Gaza on October 7, thousands of Israelis took to the streets to protest once morest the government every week.
