The Iron Beam (Iron Beam in its original name) is an air defense system with Directed Energy Weapons or lasers that might be used by Israel as a complement to its Iron Dome system, which knocks down air attacks. This is being developed by the companies Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which has previously cooperated with the Israeli government, and the North American company Raytheon. The Iron Beam would work alongside the Iron Dome and David’s Sling, another type of air defense systems, which are more expensive than the Beam, as they use rockets instead of laser beams, which only consume energy.
“The use of a laser is a game-changer and the technology is easy to operate and is proving to be economically viable,” explained Yaniv Rotem, the former head of the research and development department at the Israeli Ministry of Defense, in 2022.

The energy used in the Iron Beam will come from a fiber optic system that can reach missiles with a height of up to 7 kilometers. Thus, it would deter rocket attacks launched from the Gaza Strip by the terrorist group Hamas.
At the beginning of last year, the Israeli Ministry of Defense published a video filmed in the Negev desert, southern Israel, showing the system in operation. However, the Israeli government assured that the Iron Beam would begin operating at the beginning of 2024.
