The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation “Kan” said that the Israeli army is ready to begin the ground operation in the Gaza Strip, but Benjamin Netanyahu is behind the postponement due to political considerations.
Press reports indicated that there was Western pressure on Netanyahu to postpone the expected ground attack on Gaza, following Hamas’s release of two American hostages from the Strip.
The Times of Israel quoted a diplomatic source as saying, “The United States and many European governments are quietly pressuring Israel to postpone the ground invasion, fearing that it would thwart efforts to release more hostages in the foreseeable future.”
The source explained, “The Western governments that are currently putting pressure on Israel have citizens among the missing.”
Earlier, on Saturday, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy told the leaders of the Golani Brigade, “We will enter the Gaza Strip. We will engage in an operational mission with the aim of eliminating elements affiliated with Hamas. We will also remember in our minds the images and scenes of those who fell two weeks ago.”
Halevy added: “Gaza is complex, Gaza is crowded, the enemy is preparing many things there, but we are also preparing for him. We are accompanied in the ground maneuver by all the capabilities of the IDF, so be bold in this thinking. Be very determined, and convey a feeling of extreme confidence to your soldiers. This spirit will achieve victory. Your professionalism The result will be determined. I am very confident in you, I am very proud of you, this is pride and this is strength and with this strength you will prevail.”
