Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has warned the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah that in the event of an escalation of the situation or conflict it will send Lebanon “to the stone age”. “You have made mistakes in the past and you have paid dearly for it. If an escalation or conflict develops, we will send Lebanon back to the Stone Age,” Gallant said in statements reported by The Times of Israel. “We will not hesitate to use all our power, and we will destroy every inch of Hebollah and Lebanon if necessary,” added the minister during his visit to the Shebaa Farms, on the border between the two countries. In addition, he has urged the organization “not to make a mistake”, although he has assured that Israel does not seek war, and that its intention is only to “protect the citizens, the soldiers and the sovereignty” of the country. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have been rising in recent months following the party-militia set up a camp in the demilitarized zone on the border with Israel in April. The camp is located in the area under the control of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), specifically to the north of the fence erected by Israel, but on the Israeli side of the Blue Line, which functions as the line of contact for the halt the fire. In addition, during the month of April more than a dozen missiles were launched into Israeli territory from Lebanon and, although the Israeli authorities blamed the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), they believe they might have been approved by Hezbollah. The border between the two countries is not officially demarcated and is located in the Shebaa Farms, a strip of land claimed by both Lebanon and Syria as their own, but under Israeli military control since 1967. In fact, the UN has a presence in the border between Lebanon and Israel since 1978, but UNIFIL with its current format dates from 2006. It currently has regarding 10,000 troops and Spain is, with more than 600 soldiers, one of the countries that contributes the most personnel, only behind Indonesia , Italy and Nepal.
