The United Nations (UN) Security Council held an emergency session on Monday (28/10) local time following a letter from Iran’s envoy to the UN, Amir Said Iravani, to Secretary General Antonio Guterres and members of the Security Council.
This emergency session was requested by Russia, Algeria and China on Monday (28/10) to discuss Israel’s attack on Iran which occurred last weekend.
UN Assistant Secretary General for the Middle East and Asia Pacific, Khaled Khiari, said Guterres condemned all actions that increase tensions and called for an end to war rhetoric and threats.

“Both sides must stop testing the limits of each other’s patience and act for regional peace and stability,” he said, adding that the past year had brought extraordinary suffering to people throughout the Middle East, Khiari said.
Khiari highlighted the miserable conditions of Palestinians in northern Gaza. He said the number of deaths, injuries and destruction in the northern region was horrific.
This was further exacerbated by delays in the final stages of the polio vaccination campaign in northern Gaza which threatened the lives of thousands of children.

Algeria’s UN envoy, Amar Bendjama, again warned of the risk of Israeli aggression against Gaza spreading across the Middle East, saying “Unfortunately, this risk has become a reality.”
“We are facing a regional conflict with serious and predictable global consequences,” he continued.
He also criticized several members of the Security Council who were reluctant to call this situation a threat to international peace and security.
“The Israeli attack is a clear violation of international peace, and this Council must act to restore international peace and security,” he added.
Bendjama called on council members to implement an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and end Israel’s occupation of the entire Arab region. (Ant/P-3)
