An Israeli woman managed to survive with her daughter the repeated assaults of Hamas terrorists during the attack on her village last Saturday by barricading themselves in a secure room using a vacuum cleaner and a rolling pin.
A resident of the village of Nir Oz, a few kilometers from the Gaza Strip, Irit Lahav quickly took refuge in a secure room when she learned of the arrival of Hamas fighters, she told CNN.
Typically used for bombing, secure rooms do not contain a lock that can be locked for security reasons.
Ms. Lavah sought advice amid repeated bombings on how to protect herself.
“Everywhere, endless, endless, endless shooting and grenades. So I’m trying to figure out what to do. Will they perhaps force our door? How can I make sure it is closed properly?” she stressed to the media.
“I started texting and calling people at the kibbutz asking how to lock the door, but no one knew,” she said.
That’s when his brother sent him a photo of his door locked with two brooms.
“I don’t have any brooms. How might I do that? Mrs. Lavah said to herself. “Then I remembered I had a rolling pin and I took it, then I took my Dyson vacuum cleaner.”
Hearing voices of men shouting and banging everywhere, she quickly set up her little barricade.
“We thought we were going to die and they kept hitting the door trying to open it. And I was sure that no matter what I did, the vacuum cleaner and the rolling pin would not hold, but that’s what happened,” Ms. Lavah recalled.
The attackers then left the scene, before other terrorists returned an hour later, “trying to force the door once more.”
“It was so scary,” the mother said. “The third time they came back. It was like a never-ending nightmare.”
